"‘Tonight, in the city of David, a Savior is born, 'tis Christ the Lord.'"

"There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church, which is, of course, quite a different thing."
-Bishop Fulton J. Sheen
Placating terrorists, meeting with dictators, compassion for murderers... but no humanity for the unborn... incredible.

Morning and Night Prayers for Monday, August 20

Morning Prayer (Lauds)

Begin with the Dual Prayer (Our Father and Hail Mary).

Then, the Invitatory Psalm:

Make the sign of the Cross on the lips at the words "O Lord, open my lips."

O Lord, open my lips.

And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

Let us rejoice in the Lord and extol him with songs.

Come let us praise the Lord with joy:
let us joyfully sing to God our saviour.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving;
and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.

Let us rejoice in the Lord and extol him with songs.

For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
For in his hand are all the ends of the earth:
and the heights of the mountains are his.
For the sea is his, and he made it:
and his hands formed the dry land.

Let us rejoice in the Lord and extol him with songs.

Come let us adore and fall down:
and weep before the Lord that made us.
For he is the Lord our God:
and we are the people of his pasture
and the sheep of his hand.

Let us rejoice in the Lord and extol him with songs.

Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts:
As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness:
where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.

Let us rejoice in the Lord and extol him with songs.

Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said:
These always err in heart.
And these men have not known my ways:
so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.

Let us rejoice in the Lord and extol him with songs.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 89 (90)

Let the Lord's glory shine upon us

Lord, thou hast been our refuge
from generation to generation.
Before the mountains were made, or the earth and the world was formed;
from eternity and to eternity thou art God.

Turn not man away to be brought low:
and thou hast said: Be converted, O ye sons of men.
For a thousand years in thy sight
are as yesterday, which is past.
And as a watch in the night.

Things that are counted nothing,
shall their years be.
In the morning man shall grow up like grass;
in the morning he shall flourish and pass away:
in the evening he shall fall, grow dry, and wither.

For in thy wrath we have fainted away:
and are troubled in thy indignation.
Thou hast set our iniquities before thy eyes:
our life in the light of thy countenance.

For all our days are spent;
and in thy wrath we have fainted away.
Our years shall be considered as a spider:
The days of our years in them
are threescore and ten years.
But if in the strong they be fourscore years:
and what is more of them is labour and sorrow.
For mildness is come upon us:
and we shall be corrected.
Who knoweth the power of thy anger,
and for thy fear
Can number thy wrath?
So make thy right hand known:
and men learned in heart, in wisdom.

Return, O Lord, how long?
and be entreated in favour of thy servants.
We are filled in the morning with thy mercy:
and we have rejoiced, and are delighted all our days.
We have rejoiced for the days in which thou hast humbled us:
for the years in which we have seen evils.

Look upon thy servants and upon their works:
and direct their children.
And let the brightness of the Lord our God be upon us:
and direct thou the works of our hands over us;
yea, the work of our hands do thou direct.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle

Isaiah 42

God, the victor and saviour

Sing ye to the Lord a new song,
his praise is from the ends of the earth:
you that go down to the sea, and all that are therein:
ye islands, and ye inhabitants of them.

Let the desert and the cities thereof be exalted:
Cedar shall dwell in houses:
ye inhabitants of Petra, give praise,
they shall cry from the top of the mountains.
They shall give glory to the Lord,
and shall declare his praise in the islands.

The Lord shall go forth as a mighty man,
as a man of war shall he stir up zeal:
he shall shout and cry:
he shall prevail against his enemies.

I have always held my peace,
I have I kept silence,
I have been patient,
I will speak now as a woman in labour:
I will destroy, and swallow up at once.
I will lay waste the mountains and hills,
and will make all their grass to wither:
and I will turn rivers into islands,
and will dry up the standing pools.

And I will lead the blind into the way which they know not:
and in the paths which they were ignorant of I will make them walk:
I will make darkness light before them,
and crooked things straight.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Re: Morning and Night Prayers for Monday, August 20

Psalm 134 (135)

Praise the Lord, the wonder-worker

Praise ye the name of the Lord:
O you his servants, praise the Lord:
You that stand in the house of the Lord,
in the courts of the house of our God.

Praise ye the Lord, for the Lord is good:
sing ye to his name, for it is sweet.
For the Lord hath chosen Jacob unto himself:
Israel for his own possession.

For I have known that the Lord is great,
and our God is above all gods.
Whatsoever the Lord hath pleased he hath done,
in heaven, in earth, in the sea, and in all the deeps.
He bringeth up clouds from the end of the earth:
he hath made lightnings for the rain.
He bringeth forth winds out of his stores.

He slew the firstborn of Egypt
from man even unto beast.
He sent forth signs and wonders in the midst of thee, O Egypt:
upon Pharao, and upon all his servants.
He smote many nations,
and slew mighty kings:
Sehon king of the Amorrhites,
and Og king of Basan,
and all the kingdoms of Chanaan.
And gave their land for an inheritance,
for an inheritance to his people Israel.

Thy name, O Lord, is for ever:
thy memorial, O Lord, unto all generations.
For the Lord will judge his people,
and will be entreated in favour of his servants.

The idols of the Gentiles are silver and gold,
the works of men's hands.
They have a mouth, but they speak not:
they have eyes, but they see not.
They have ears, but they hear not:
neither is there any breath in their mouths.
Let them that make them be like to them:
and every one that trusteth in them.

Bless the Lord, O house of Israel:
bless the Lord, O house of Aaron.
Bless the Lord, O house of Levi:
you that fear the Lord, bless the Lord.
Blessed be the Lord out of Sion,
who dwelleth in Jerusalem.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Short Reading

Judith 8:25 - 27

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God who, as he tested our ancestors, is now testing us. Remember how he treated Abraham, all the ordeals of Isaac and all that happened to Jacob. For as these ordeals were intended by him to search their hearts, so now this is not vengeance that God exacts against us, but a warning inflicted by the Lord on those who are near his heart.

Canticle

Benedictus

The Messiah and his forerunner

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words "Blessed be the Lord…"

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people: And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant: As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, who are from the beginning: Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us: To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy testament, The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us, That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear, In holiness and justice before him, all our days.

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways: To give knowledge of salvation to his people, unto the remission of their sins: Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us: To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Prayers and Intercessions

Let us cry out to Christ, who hears the prayers of those who hope in him:
    - Lord, we praise you; in you we hope.
Lord, you are rich in compassion:
we thank you for the enormous love you have shown us.
United with the Father you govern and conserve the world:
renew all things by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Open our eyes today:
    make us perceive your wonders.
Today you are calling us to serve you:
may your grace shine through all that we do for our brethren.

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

O God, you have made us guardians and cultivators of the earth, you have sent the sun to shine on us and help us.
Grant that today we may work for your glory
and for the good of our neighbour.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 God for ever and ever.
Amen.

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words "May the Lord bless us…"

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.

Re: Morning and Night Prayers for Monday, August 20

Compline (Night Prayer)

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words “O God…”.

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience.

Penitential Rite

I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

Amen.

Psalm 85 (86)

A poor man's prayer in time of trouble

Lord God, you are full of mercies, patient and true.

Incline thy ear, O Lord, and hear me:
for I am needy and poor.
Preserve my soul, for I am holy:
save thy servant, O my God, that trusteth in thee.

Have mercy on me, O Lord,
for I have cried to thee all the day.
Give joy to the soul of thy servant,
for to thee, O Lord, I have lifted up my soul.
For thou, O Lord, art sweet and mild:
and plenteous in mercy to all that call upon thee.

Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer:
and attend to the voice of my petition.
I have called upon thee in the day of my trouble:
because thou hast heard me.

There is none among the gods like unto thee, O Lord:
and there is none according to thy works.
All the nations thou hast made
shall come and adore before thee, O Lord:
and they shall glorify thy name.
For thou art great and dost wonderful things:
thou art God alone.

Conduct me, O Lord, in thy way,
and I will walk in thy truth:
let my heart rejoice that it may fear thy name.
I will praise thee, O Lord my God:
with my whole heart,
and I will glorify thy name for ever:
For thy mercy is great towards me:
and thou hast delivered my soul out of the lower hell.

O God, the wicked are risen up against me,
and the assembly of the mighty have sought my soul:
and they have not set thee before their eyes.
And thou, O Lord, art a God of compassion,
and merciful, patient, and of much mercy, and true.
O look upon me, and have mercy on me:
give thy command to thy servant,
and save the son of thy handmaid.

Shew me a token for good:
that they who hate me may see,
and be confounded,
Because thou, O Lord,
hast helped me and hast comforted me.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Lord God, you are full of mercies, patient and true.

Reading

1 Thessalonians 5:9-10

For God hath not appointed us unto wrath, but unto the purchasing of salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us; that, whether we watch or sleep, we may live together with him.

Short Responsory

Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Canticle

Nunc Dimittis

Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words “Now thou dost…”.

Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord,
according to thy word in peace;
Because my eyes have seen thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples:
A light to the revelation of the Gentiles,
and the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Prayer

Let us pray.

Give our bodies rest, Lord, to restore them; and let the seeds sown by our labours today grow and yield an eternal harvest.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.

Final Antiphon

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our Life, our Sweetness, and our Hope.
To Thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To Thee do we send up our sighs,
Mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate,
Thine Eyes of Mercy toward us,
and after this our exile,
show unto us the Blessed Fruit of thy Womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary;
Pray for us O Holy Mother of God,
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

End with the Triple Prayer: Our Father, Hail Mary, and Apostles Creed.
