"‘Tonight, in the city of David, a Savior is born, 'tis Christ the Lord.'"

"There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church, which is, of course, quite a different thing."
-Bishop Fulton J. Sheen
Placating terrorists, meeting with dictators, compassion for murderers... but no humanity for the unborn... incredible.

Morning and Night Prayers for Thursday, August 30

Morning Prayer (Lauds)

Begin with the Dual Prayer (Our Father and Hail Mary).

Then, the Invitatory Psalm:

Make the Sign of the Cross on the lips at the words "O Lord, open my lips.”

O Lord, open my lips.

And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

Come, let us worship the Lord, for he is our God.

The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof:
the world, and all they that dwell therein.
For he hath founded it upon the seas;
and hath prepared it upon the rivers.

Come, let us worship the Lord, for he is our God.

Who shall ascend into the mountain of the Lord:
or who shall stand in his holy place?
The innocent in hands, and clean of heart,
who hath not taken his soul in vain,
nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbour.
He shall receive a blessing from the Lord,
and mercy from God his Saviour.
This is the generation of them that seek him,
of them that seek the face of the God of Jacob.

Come, let us worship the Lord, for he is our God.

Lift up your gates, O ye princes,
and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates:
and the King of Glory shall enter in.
Who is this King of Glory?
the Lord who is strong and mighty:
the Lord mighty in battle.

Come, let us worship the Lord, for he is our God.

Lift up your gates, O ye princes,
and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates:
and the King of Glory shall enter in.
Who is this King of Glory?
the Lord of hosts, he is the King of Glory.

Come, let us worship the Lord, for he is our God.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 56 (57)

Morning prayer in time of affliction

Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me:
for my soul trusteth in thee.
And in the shadow of thy wings will I hope,
until iniquity pass away.
I will cry to God the most High;
to God who hath done good to me.
He hath sent from heaven and delivered me:
he hath made them a reproach that trod upon me.
God hath sent his mercy and his truth,
And he hath delivered my soul
from the midst of the young lions.
I slept troubled.
The sons of men,
whose teeth are weapons and arrows,
and their tongue a sharp sword.
Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens,
and thy glory above all the earth.
They prepared a snare for my feet;
and they bowed down my soul.
They dug a pit before my face,
and they are fallen into it.
My heart is ready, O God,
my heart is ready:
I will Sing, and rehearse a psalm.
Arise, O my glory, arise psaltery and harp:
I will arise early.
I will give praise to thee, O Lord, among the people:
I will sing a psalm to thee among the nations.
For thy mercy is magnified even to the heavens:
and thy truth unto the clouds.
Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens:
and thy glory above all the earth.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle

Jeremiah 31

The joy of those whom God sets free

Hear the word of the Lord, O ye nations,
and declare it in the islands that are afar off, and say:
He that scattered Israel will gather him:
and he will keep him as the shepherd doth his flock.

For the Lord hath redeemed Jacob,
and delivered him out of the hand
of one that was mightier than he.
And they shall come,
and shall give praise in mount Sion:
And they shall flow together to the good things of the Lord,
for the corn, and wine, and oil,
And the increase of cattle and herds,
and their soul shall be as a watered garden,
And they shall be hungry no more.

Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance,
the young men and old men together:
and I will turn their mourning into joy,
and will comfort them,
and make them joyful after their sorrow.
And I will fill the soul of the priests with fatness:
and my people shall be filled with my good things, saith the Lord.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 47 (48)

Thanksgiving for the safety of the people

Great is the Lord,
and exceedingly to be praised in the city of our God,
in his holy mountain.
With the joy of the whole earth is mount Sion founded,
on the sides of the north, the city of the great king.
In her houses shall God be known,
when he shall protect her.

For behold the kings of the earth assembled themselves:
they gathered together.
So they saw, and they wondered,
they were troubled, they were moved:
Trembling took hold of them.
There were pains as of a woman in labour.
With a vehement wind
thou shalt break in pieces the ships of Tharsis.

As we have heard, so have we seen,
in the city of the Lord of hosts,
in the city of our God:
God hath founded it for ever.
We have received thy mercy, O God,
in the midst of thy temple.
According to thy name, O God,
so also is thy praise unto the ends of the earth:
thy right hand is full of justice.
Let mount Sion rejoice,
and the daughters of Juda be glad;
because of thy judgments, O Lord.

Surround Sion, and encompass her:
tell ye in her towers.
Set your hearts on her strength;
and distribute her houses,
that ye may relate it in another generation.
For this is God, our God unto eternity,
and for ever and ever:
he shall rule us for evermore.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Short reading

Isaiah 66:1 - 2

Thus saith the Lord: Heaven is my throne, and the earth my footstool: what is this house that you will build to me? and what is this place of my rest? My hand made all these things, and all these things were made, saith the Lord. But to whom shall I have respect, but to him that is poor and little, and of a contrite spirit, and that trembleth at my words?

Canticle

Benedictus

The Messiah and his forerunner

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words "Blessed be the Lord…"

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people: And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant: As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, who are from the beginning: Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us: To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy testament, The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us, That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear, In holiness and justice before him, all our days.

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways: To give knowledge of salvation to his people, unto the remission of their sins: Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us: To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Prayers and Intercessions

Let us thank Christ who has given us the light of this day, and let us pray to him:
    - Bless us, Lord, and sanctify us.
You offered yourself up for our sins:
accept all that we are doing and plan to do today.
Our eyes rejoice at the gift of a new day:
may our hearts rejoice as you dawn in them.
Grant us the gift today of being patient with everyone,
so that we can be like you.
This morning, Lord, make us understand your compassion:
may your joy give us strength through the day.

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

Almighty and ever-living God, we pray to you in your majesty morning, noon and night:
erase from our hearts the shadow of sin,
and fill them with the true light, which is Christ.

He lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 God for ever and ever.
Amen.

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words "May the Lord bless us…"

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.

Re: Morning and Night Prayers for Thursday, August 30

Compline (Night Prayer)

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words “oh God…”.

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience.

Penitential Rite

I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

Amen.

Psalm 15 (16)

The Lord, my inheritance

My body will rest in calm and hope.

Preserve me, O Lord,
for I have put trust in thee.

I have said to the Lord,
thou art my God,
for thou hast no need of my goods.
To the saints, who are in his land,
he hath made wonderful all my desires in them.
Their infirmities were multiplied:
afterwards they made haste.
I will not gather together their meetings for blood offerings:
nor will I be mindful of their names by my lips.

The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup:
it is thou that wilt restore my inheritance to me.
The lines are fallen unto me in goodly places:
for my inheritance is goodly to me.
I will bless the Lord,
who hath given me understanding:
moreover my reins also have corrected me even till night.
I set the Lord always in my sight:
for he is at my right hand,
that I be not moved.
Therefore my heart hath been glad,
and my tongue hath rejoiced:
moreover my flesh also shall rest in hope.

Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell;
nor wilt then give thy holy one to see corruption.
Thou hast made known to me the ways of life,
thou shalt fill me with joy with thy countenance:
at thy right hand are delights even to the end.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

My body will rest in calm and hope.

Reading

1 Thessalonians 5:23

And may the God of peace himself sanctify you in all things; that your whole spirit, and soul, and body, may be preserved blameless in the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Short Responsory

Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Canticle

Nunc Dimittis

Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words “Now thou dost…”.

Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord,
according to thy word in peace;
Because my eyes have seen thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples:
A light to the revelation of the Gentiles,
and the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Prayer

Let us pray.

Lord our God, we are tired by the work of the day. Refresh us with peaceful sleep and, forever renewed by the help you give, let us always be dedicated to you in body and mind.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.

Final Antiphon

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve;
to thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us;
and after this our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us O holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

End with the Triple Prayer: Our Father, Hail Mary, and Apostles Creed.
