And so it begins

"Tallinn, November 22 – A senior official of the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church has called for the establishment of Orthodox “druzhiny” groups to promote law and order, and a senior official of the Russian interior ministry says the government will consider backing this idea.

During a radio interview on Wednesday evening, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, deputy chief of the Patriarchate’s powerful External Affairs Department, said that Orthodox citizens should create “druzhiny” squads to take back the streets from those who in one way or another are disturbing the peace (www.interfax-religion.ru/orthodoxy/?act=news&div=27397).
The next day, Valery Gribakin, a senior official of the Russian interior ministry, said that the Russian government would actively consider this because the ministry is “interested in the help of any public movements and organizations in the support of public order in Russian population points” (www.interfax-religion.ru/orthodoxy/?act=news&div=27408).

Some Orthodox groups are not waiting for ministerial approval. Kirill Frolov, head of the Moscow section of the Russian nationalist Union of Orthodox Citizens, told “Kommersant” that his group is forming these groups within the Society of St. Thomas and would be ready to start on December 1 (kommersant.ru/doc.aspx?DocsID=1075889&NodesID=7)."

"Representatives of human rights organizations are expressing themselves categorically against the manifestation on the streets of "images of civic peaceableness". "To create such druzhiny - means to sign off on your own helplessness and about how the law-enforcement organs are refusing to keep tabs on order", declared leader of the movement "For human rights" Lev Ponomarev. Head of the informational-analytical service of the movement Yevgeny Ikhlov reported to an Utro correspondent that his organization considers such an initiative "dangerous" on the strength of the underscored confessionality of the druzhiny being created.

"A druzina - this is after all assistance to the law-enforcement organs, who have corresponding powers in relation to citizens. They are already a part of the state. Our state is not religious, it is decidedly secular and separate from religion. The creation of such a druzhina, to which will be invited people only of the Orthodox faith-confession subordinated to the patriarchate (and this far from exhausts the Orthodox), signifies that the Moscow patriarchate is getting a privileged status, which strikes out the secular character of the state", declared the human rights advocate.

Besides this, Ikhlov brings attention to the fact that following in the footsteps of the Orthodox druzhiny in Muslim regions may declare about the creation of Islamic patrols, motivating this by the need to struggle with Wahhabists. Inadmissible, in the opinion of the human rights advocate, is also the fact that signing up for the druzhiny will be primarily "boys and girls from militarized party structures", as well as veterans of regional conflicts, "who, let's put it this way, if not the psyche, then the nerves are strongly overloaded". "

Vienna, December 20 – A call by a Duma member to restrict immigration in order to “fight radical Islam” and a suggestion by Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov that Russian citizens should get the jobs many guest workers now fill appear certain to spark a new wave of inter-ethnic violence in the Russian Federation.
Until recently anti-immigrant statements generally emanated from xenophobic groups like the Movement Against Illegal Immigration (DPNI) or famously outspoken politicians like Liberal Democratic Party leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky, but in recent weeks, these statements have entered the mainstream as a result of worsening economic conditions.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said that he favored cutting immigration quotas in half in 2009, a statement that many in and around DPNI welcomed as a victory for their views and one that appears to have triggered new violence by Russian extremists against people from Central Asia and the Caucasus.
But on Wednesday, this already tense situation was exacerbated by an interview Semen Bagdasarov, a member of the Duma’s international relations committee, gave to “NG-Religii (religion.ng.ru/politic/2008-12-17/1_jihad.html) about this issue, and even more so by a new statement from Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov (www.narodru.ru/news20094.html).
In his interview, Bagdasarov said that Moscow must adopt new laws to limit the influx of radical Islamist terrorists from Central Asia and the Caucasus who threaten to bring “the global jihad” into the Russian Federation and result in terrorist acts against the Russian people and the Russian state.
Among the measures he suggested was the introduction of visa regimes with many of these states, the development of measures to monitor “suspicious elements” among immigrants, and the adoption a law that would impose criminal penalties on employers who did not ensure that workers they dismissed were sent back to their homelands.
But even that will not be enough to deal with the problem, Bagdasarov continued. Moscow must direct the Muslim clergy in Russia to conduct an ideological campaign against the supporters of “global jihad” and “field commanders” from the hotspots in the North Caucasus and Central Asia, something the Russian authorities have not yet done.
None of these measures on its face is necessarily a bad thing given the dangers that emanate from some Islamist groups, but – and this is what is critical – many Russian extremists will see this as a hunting license to attack immigrants, since this invocation of an Islamist threat will silence many in Moscow and the West who might otherwise criticize such attacks.
Druzhinniki, popular militias whose members sometimes carry arms and which have links to the Russian Orthodox Church’s nationalist wing, are already patrolling Russian cities seeking to keep immigrants from any actions that violate law and order, a development that has prompted some Muslim groups hitherto quiescence to become more active.
And organizations like DPNI also appear to be becoming increasingly active despite attacks on their leaders and the recent conviction of several individuals linked to that group for xenophobic actions, all of which has alarmed human rights groups in Moscow and elsewhere (religion.sova-center.ru/events/13B74CE/14C8529/C309FD1).
But even worse situation may lie ahead, particularly given the populist statement this week of Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov who said that Russian should get the jobs migrants now hold, with quotas on the latter being established not only at the national level but in each individual plant and factory.
Speaking to a conference of law enforcement officials, Luzhkov said that it was imperative that quotas for immigrants be cut in Moscow and that the freed-up work places be given to natives of the Russian capital, a populist statement that will likely lead some Russian workers to demand that migrants be dismissed.
For many years, Luzhkov has taken a hard line against migrants even as his city has benefited from them. Most infamously, in October 1994, he issued the infamous order to expel from Moscow “persons of Caucasus nationality,” an order that not only was extended to other cities but sparked violence against migrants and set the stage for the Chechen war."

My comment - we have a crusade in the making - we live in such interesting times .

Interesting and frightening. My comment is that there are many who long for the clarity of an idealistic Crusade but will be disappointed. The purpose of the real historical crusades was to liberate the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It was not to militarily defeat the Turk and stamp out Islam. The other Crusades, like the Reconquista and the defense of Vienna and the Battle of Lepanto were basically defensive.

The russians want in this case to avoid the fate of the Eastern Roman Empire - they were conquered by the tatars once you know .

War is always a tragedy Michael , no matter what . But it would be ironic to see other christians fleeing in exile because they sat idle when action was needed . Look what happens in Zimbabwe or Mexico when the christian model is replaced by a pagan one - we can look the other way but the future generations will not have that luxury - do you want your kin to have the fate of the greeks from Asia Minor ?

Re: And so it begins

You know I do not want those things, AD. It would be a mistake to believe that going to war for a western government would be the same as going to war for the Gospel. The Gospel does not inform the West any longer. My question is, what is there left that is worth fighting for?

The Church, yes, definitely.

Freedom? Most people embrace slavery out of fear for the future. They voted for Obama, for goodness sakes.

My neighbors? Some of them. By no means all.

Family and friends? Yes.

So where in that is the West in our calculations? It is not there because it has already been sold for trinkets.

Michael , look at the evil at work even in the east

"Romania weighs decriminalizing consensual incest"

"But Romania's Justice Ministry suggests the new legislation would move the country — which joined the European Union two years ago — closer legally to some other EU members."

Warning , abominations ahead .

Taking back the streets?

That's the job of the law enforcers.

The Church should not become entrenched in such matters.

The trials may be fierce, Tony. We may have to hold our own streets if the police fail us. I can't find any Catholic teaching that allows the use of violence except for strictly defensive purposes, though. We are called to be peaceful.

I wish Nord were here. He did more to convince me of that than anyone else.

Re: And so it begins

Who are we fearing taking over our streets? The crusades was a very different time. And then only to liberate the Church. Sad part is, the Church is more often attacked today then at the time of the crusades.

The Church should never become entrenched in law and order. That is not their job.

Our only real enemy is the poisoned fruit of the enlightenment. The idea that man should live without God.
