Only a rumor for now...

VATICAN - March 30, 2006 (ACI) - The Missal of Saint Pius V, which the Catholic Church used up to 1962 and which was replaced by the "Novus Ordo" (New Order) liturgy approved as a consequence of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council, could be approved for universal use, according to sources close to the Vatican.

The decision, regarding which Pope Benedict XVI consulted with the cardinals and with the heads of the Vatican dicasteries, could be announced after the April 7 meeting of the Pontiff with the "capidicasterio" [Heads of dicasteries].
...
The universal approval would mean that the old rite Mass may be freely celebrated throughout the world by the priests who wish to do so.

The measure is not directly related to the problem of the Lefebvrist schism, for, as a theologian, the Pontiff always expressed his wish to recover this liturgy.

Agreed, Tony.

Regardless of any bearing this would have on the negotiations with the SSPX, this is good news. I will celebrate the day it is official since I do not know who the leakers are and their motivations for talking to reporters. If nothing else this should be motivation to keep praying for the happy day when the traditional liturgy is freed.

Re: The rumor grows...

It is now reported that the Holy Father has already signed the decree freeing the Tridentine liturgy...

http://archivum.ilcannocchiale.it/?id_blogdoc=930202

The details of the decree, if this is indeed true, are not known.

Re: And we hold our breaths for a little while longer...

Apparently Radio Vatican confirmed in its Italian broadcast the Pope Benedict signed a document regarding the Mass and it will be announced on Holy Thursday, the celebration of the institution of the Eucharist.

The broadcast did not specify if the document applies to the TLM, the NO, or both.

Re: And the news is breaking, though still not official...

Yes to the Mass "with the back to the people"

by PAOLO LUIGI RODARI

[THE GESTURE]

In the next few days, maybe on Holy Thursday (the news is not still certain), Benedict XVI could decide to fulfill an official gesture in which he would grant the possibility, to whomever whishes to do so, to celebrate Holy Mass according to the ancient rite, that of Saint Pius V, and could do so by declaring that this rite (which was the one in force before the Second Vatican Council) is still in effect today simply because it has never been abolished.

[WHAT COULD HAPPEN]

The Pope's gesture, which, if accomplished, could determine an important development even towards the schismatic Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X, founded by bishop Marcel Lefebvre. With this kind of indult, in fact, all Traditionalists of the Holy Roman Church could return to celebrate Mass with the ancient rite without asking for the permission of a diocesan bishop and, in the meantime, the Lefebvrists, in view of the openness to Tradition made by Rome, could arrive at a declaration of acceptance, without conditions, of the accomplishments made by the Church during and after the Second Vatican Council and, in this way, receive the revocation of the excommunication by the pope, they themselves also returning [and] celebrating freely the Mass with the old rite.

[The new members of P. C. Ecclesia Dei]

Yesterday, ... the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, ... received the nomination of three new members..., all cardinals created in the last consistory. They are William Levada,...Jean-Pierre Ricard, ... and Antonio Canizares [sic] Llovera..., three routine nominations, probably made on the suggestion of Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos, who is the president of Ecclesia Dei.

It is a common practice, in fact, that, after every consistory, the new porporati be admitted as members of a few dicasteries of the Roman Curia and the choice of these three for the commission which cares for the relations with the Lefebvrists is justifiable, more than anything else, for technical reasons. ... Levada has been named as prefect of the former Holy Office (when he was a cardinal, Ratzinger occupied this position), because it is obvious that the president of Doctrine of the Faith be a member of a commission which deals with doctrinal questions. Ricard was already a member of Ecclesia Dei from the time he was a bishop (he has been nominated because it is in France that there is the highest number of practicing Lefebvrists [sic]) and, thus, his has been above all an ordinary reconfirmation. Perhaps the only unexpected nomination was that of Canizares, a great friend of Ratzinger, whose outstanding theological preparation can only add to the commission. ...

Re: French Bishops release a statement...

I was waiting for someone to translate this.

French Bishops Open to Lefebvre's Followers

Will Do "Everything Possible" to Achieve Full Communion

LOURDES, France, APRIL 7, 2006 (ZENIT.org).- The bishops of France expressed their willingness to receive Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre's followers, once they are reconciled with the Holy See.

In a note issued today, at the end of their four-day plenary assembly, members of the French episcopal conference said: "We know that Benedict XVI is concerned about" relations with the Society of St. Pius X, founded by Archbishop Lefebvre.

"In the forthcoming weeks or months, he should give directives to facilitate the way towards a possible return to full communion," they said.

"We will received them in faith and apply them with fidelity. Evangelically, everything possible must be done so that the Lord's word -- 'That they be one' -- is fulfilled," the bishops continued.

According to the bishops, "this communion must be sought in charity and truth. Charity means to try to know and understand one another, and to make false images disappear that we might have of one another."

"It means, at the same time, abandoning all systematic controversies and all desire for confrontation," they added.

Truth "implies being clear on our points of dissension. In fact, the latter affect acceptance of the magisterium more than questions of liturgy, in particular, that of the Second Vatican Council and of Popes of the last decades," they emphasized.

"Communion may be accompanied by questions, requests for precision or further reflection," they indicated. "It cannot tolerate a systematic rejection of the council, criticism of its teaching, or denigration of the liturgical reform decreed by the council."

Re: Rumors grow...

Vatican City, Apr. 10, 2006 (CNA) - A source at the Vatican has told CNA that during Holy Week Pope Benedict XVI may grant universal permission to use the Missal of St. Pius V, the liturgical rite used in the Church before Vatican II.

According to the source, the announcement could come “between Holy Thursday and Easter Sunday,” but the exact day has not yet been set. Nevertheless, the source said the decision has already been made by the Holy Father and that it’s “only a matter of time” before it is publicly announced.

“A minor official gesture by the Holy Father would be enough to allow the Mass according to the 1962 Missal to celebrated by whoever desires to do so, thus reiterating that this rite is still valid today simply because it was not abolished,” the source told CNA.

The announcement would be in the context of “the reform of the reform” that Pope Benedict XVI is promoting, which includes norms and principles that will be made public in the upcoming post-synod Apostolic Exhortation on the Eucharist.
