Re: Only a rumor for now...

This is fantastic news. What would hold the SSPX back now from being in communion with Rome?

I hesitate to speculate on the actions or motives of the SSPX right now, Tony. But it does appear that Rome is taking concrete steps towards making a reconciliation possible.

Re: Only a rumor for now...

Well, dare I speculate that the SSPX will ask for certain teacings, if not all of Vatican II to be renounced?

Re: Only a rumor for now...

What's worse, is that if the SSPX do as we speculate, a formal pronouncement of schism may have to be made.

Re: Only a rumor for now...

Tony,
As you know, no formal pronouncement of excommunication has ever been made. That could potentially change if they rebuff all these overtures. I do not think Pope Benedict wants it to come to that but the leadership of the SSPX should not presume they will always be in the position they are now in.

I simply do not want to assume I know what the SSPX leadership is thinking. They must realize that there will be a time when they have to decide whether or not they want to be in the Catholic Church.

In the event, Holy Thursday came and went with no such document. To be honest, speculation that Benedict might disrupt the liturgical focus of Holy Week with a major policy document already suggested the rumors were a bit surreal.

I don't know about this POV, Michael. IMO, there would be no more perfect time for such a thing than Easter. For what is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass but the same Sacrifice of Calvary??? Isn't that the "liturgical focus" of Holy Week? Perhaps this indicates to us just how far away from true Catholic Teaching many are today. But sadly, I pretty much agree with the rest of that article.

Re: Still smoke looking for a fire...

Hi Natty,

Good to see you, I hope your Holy Week is everything it should be.

I do not know about the POV of the article too, especially considering its source.

It may be that the document is signed and the Pope is waiting for, what he considers, a more optimum time. It may be he signed it and is having second thoughts because of resistance from within the dicasteries. Or it may all have been an internet rumor with no reality behind it.

Ah well, we struggle on. Struggles in this life will be counted for glory in the next. Be faithful.

Re: Allen and the consensus myth...

Here is a pretty good analysis of why Allen's piece should be taken with a grain of salt.
