"‘Tonight, in the city of David, a Savior is born, 'tis Christ the Lord.'"

"There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church, which is, of course, quite a different thing."
-Bishop Fulton J. Sheen
Placating terrorists, meeting with dictators, compassion for murderers... but no humanity for the unborn... incredible.

Morning and Night Prayers for Thursday, August 23

Morning Prayer (Lauds)

Begin with the Dual Prayer (Our Father and Hail Mary).

Then, the Invitatory Psalm:

Make the Sign of the Cross on the lips at the words "O Lord, open my lips."

O Lord, open my lips.

And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

Let us exult in the Lord’s presence.

Sing joyfully to God, all the earth:
serve ye the Lord with gladness.
Come in before his presence with exceeding great joy.

Let us exult in the Lord’s presence.

Know ye that the Lord he is God:
he made us, and not we ourselves.
We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Let us exult in the Lord’s presence.

Go ye into his gates with praise,
into his courts with hymns:
and give glory to him.
Praise ye his name:
For the Lord is sweet,
his mercy endureth for ever,
and his truth to generation and generation.

Let us exult in the Lord’s presence.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 142 (143)

A prayer in time of trouble

Hear, O Lord, my prayer:
give ear to my supplication in thy truth:
hear me in thy justice.
And enter not into judgment with thy servant:
for in thy sight no man living shall be justified.

For the enemy hath persecuted my soul:
he hath brought down my life to the earth.
He hath made me to dwell in darkness
as those that have been dead of old:
And my spirit is in anguish within me:
my heart within me is troubled.
I remembered the days of old,
I meditated on all thy works:
I meditated upon the works of thy hands.
I stretched forth my hands to thee:
my soul is as earth without water unto thee.

Hear me speedily, O Lord:
my spirit hath fainted away.
Turn not away thy face from me,
lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.
Cause me to hear thy mercy in the morning;
for in thee have I hoped.
Make the way known to me, wherein I should walk:
for I have lifted up my soul to thee.
Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord,
to thee have I fled:
Teach me to do thy will,
for thou art my God.

Thy good spirit shall lead me into the right land:
For thy name's sake, O Lord,
thou wilt quicken me in thy justice.
Thou wilt bring my soul out of trouble:
And in thy mercy thou wilt destroy my enemies.
And thou wilt cut off all them that afflict my soul:
for I am thy servant.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle

Isaiah 66

Comfort and joy in the holy city

Rejoice with Jerusalem,
and be glad with her, all you that love her:
rejoice for joy with her,
all you that mourn for her.
That you may suck, and be filled
with the breasts of her consolations:
that you may milk out, and flow with delights,
from the abundance of her glory.

For thus saith the Lord:

Behold I will bring upon her as it were a river of peace,
and as an overflowing torrent the glory of the Gentiles,
which you shall suck;
you shall be carried at the breasts,
and upon the knees they shall caress you.

As one whom the mother caresseth,
so will I comfort you,
and you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
You shall see and your heart shall rejoice,
and your bones shall flourish like an herb,
and the hand of the Lord shall be known to his servants,
and he shall be angry with his enemies.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 146 (147A)

The Lord's goodness and power

Praise ye the Lord, because psalm is good:
to our God be joyful and comely praise.

The Lord buildeth up Jerusalem:
he will gather together the dispersed of Israel.
Who healeth the broken of heart,
and bindeth up their bruises.
Who telleth the number of the stars:
and calleth them all by their names.
Great is our Lord, and great is his power:
and of his wisdom there is no number.
The Lord lifteth up the meek,
and bringeth the wicked down even to the ground.

Sing ye to the Lord with praise:
sing to our God upon the harp.
Who covereth the heaven with clouds,
and prepareth rain for the earth.
Who maketh grass to grow on the mountains,
and herbs for the service of men.
Who giveth to beasts their food:
and to the young ravens that call upon him.
He shall not delight in the strength of the horse:
nor take pleasure in the legs of a man.
The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him:
and in them that hope in his mercy.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Short Reading

Romans 8:18 - 21

For I reckon that the sufferings of this time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come, that shall be revealed in us. For the expectation of the creature waiteth for the revelation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him that made it subject, in hope: Because the creature also itself shall be delivered from the servitude of corruption, into the liberty of the glory of the children of God.

Canticle

Benedictus

The Messiah and his forerunner

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words "Blessed be the Lord…"

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people: And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant: As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, who are from the beginning: Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us: To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy testament, The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us, That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear, In holiness and justice before him, all our days.

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways: To give knowledge of salvation to his people, unto the remission of their sins: Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us: To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Prayers and Intercessions

God has sent salvation to his people. Let us pray to him with joy:
    - Lord, you are our life
Blessed are you, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for in your compassion you have renewed us and given us living hope
by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
You created man in your image and in Christ you renewed us:
shape us in the image of your Son.
Our hearts are wounded by envy and hate:
fill them with the love that comes from the Holy Spirit.
Give work to labourers today, bread to the hungry, consolation to the sad,
and grace and salvation to all men.

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

Lord, give us true knowledge of our salvation,
so that freed from the hands of our enemies
we may serve you without fear all the days of our lives.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 God for ever and ever.
Amen.

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words "May the Lord bless us…"

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.

Re: Morning and Night Prayers for Thursday, August 23

Compline (Night Prayer)

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words “oh God…”.

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience.

Penitential Rite

I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

Amen.

Psalm 15 (16)

The Lord, my inheritance

My body will rest in calm and hope.

Preserve me, O Lord,
for I have put trust in thee.

I have said to the Lord,
thou art my God,
for thou hast no need of my goods.
To the saints, who are in his land,
he hath made wonderful all my desires in them.
Their infirmities were multiplied:
afterwards they made haste.
I will not gather together their meetings for blood offerings:
nor will I be mindful of their names by my lips.

The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup:
it is thou that wilt restore my inheritance to me.
The lines are fallen unto me in goodly places:
for my inheritance is goodly to me.
I will bless the Lord,
who hath given me understanding:
moreover my reins also have corrected me even till night.
I set the Lord always in my sight:
for he is at my right hand,
that I be not moved.
Therefore my heart hath been glad,
and my tongue hath rejoiced:
moreover my flesh also shall rest in hope.

Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell;
nor wilt then give thy holy one to see corruption.
Thou hast made known to me the ways of life,
thou shalt fill me with joy with thy countenance:
at thy right hand are delights even to the end.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

My body will rest in calm and hope.

Reading

1 Thessalonians 5:23

And may the God of peace himself sanctify you in all things; that your whole spirit, and soul, and body, may be preserved blameless in the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Short Responsory

Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Canticle

Nunc Dimittis

Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words “Now thou dost…”.

Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord,
according to thy word in peace;
Because my eyes have seen thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples:
A light to the revelation of the Gentiles,
and the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Prayer

Let us pray.

Lord our God, we are tired by the work of the day. Refresh us with peaceful sleep and, forever renewed by the help you give, let us always be dedicated to you in body and mind.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.

Final Antiphon

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve;
to thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us;
and after this our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us O holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

End with the Triple Prayer: Our Father, Hail Mary, and Apostles Creed.
