"‘Tonight, in the city of David, a Savior is born, 'tis Christ the Lord.'"

"There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church, which is, of course, quite a different thing."
-Bishop Fulton J. Sheen
Placating terrorists, meeting with dictators, compassion for murderers... but no humanity for the unborn... incredible.

Morning and Night Prayers for Tuesday, August 28

Morning Prayer (Lauds)

Begin with the Dual Prayer (Our Father and Hail Mary).

Then, the Invitatory Psalm:

Make the sign of the Cross on the lips at the words "O Lord, open my lips."

O Lord, open my lips.

And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

Come, let us worship the Lord, the great King.

Come let us praise the Lord with joy:
let us joyfully sing to God our saviour.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving;
and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.

Come, let us worship the Lord, the great King.

For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
For in his hand are all the ends of the earth:
and the heights of the mountains are his.
For the sea is his, and he made it:
and his hands formed the dry land.

Come, let us worship the Lord, the great King.

Come let us adore and fall down:
and weep before the Lord that made us.
For he is the Lord our God:
and we are the people of his pasture
and the sheep of his hand.

Come, let us worship the Lord, the great King.

Today if you shall hear his voice,
harden not your hearts:
As in the provocation,
according to the day of temptation in the wilderness:
where your fathers tempted me, they proved me,
and saw my works.

Come, let us worship the Lord, the great King.

Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said:
These always err in heart.
And these men have not known my ways:
so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.

Come, let us worship the Lord, the great King.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 23 (24)

The Lord comes to his temple

The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof:
the world, and all they that dwell therein.
For he hath founded it upon the seas;
and hath prepared it upon the rivers.

Who shall ascend into the mountain of the Lord:
or who shall stand in his holy place?
The innocent in hands, and clean of heart,
who hath not taken his soul in vain,
nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbour.
He shall receive a blessing from the Lord,
and mercy from God his Saviour.
This is the generation of them that seek him,
of them that seek the face of the God of Jacob.

Lift up your gates, O ye princes,
and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates:
and the King of Glory shall enter in.
Who is this King of Glory?
the Lord who is strong and mighty:
the Lord mighty in battle.

Lift up your gates, O ye princes,
and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates:
and the King of Glory shall enter in.
Who is this King of Glory?
the Lord of hosts, he is the King of Glory.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle

Tobit 13

God punishes and saves

Thou art great, O Lord, for ever,
and thy kingdom is unto all ages:
For thou scourgest, and thou savest:
thou leadest down to hell, and bringest up again:
and there is none that can escape thy hand.

Give glory to the Lord, ye children of Israel,
and praise him in the sight of the Gentiles:
Because he hath therefore scattered you among the Gentiles,
who know not him,
that you may declare his wonderful works,
and make them know that there is no other almighty God besides him.

He hath chastised us for our iniquities:
and he will save us for his own mercy.

See then what he hath done with us,
and with fear and trembling give ye glory to him:
and extol the eternal King of worlds in your works.

As for me, I will praise him in the land of my captivity:
because he hath shewn his majesty toward a sinful nation.
Be converted therefore, ye sinners,
and do justice before God,
believing that he will shew his mercy to you.

And I and my soul will rejoice in him.
Bless ye the Lord, all his elect,
keep days of joy, and give glory to him.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Re: Morning and Night Prayers for Tuesday, August 28

Psalm 32 (33)

The Lord provides

Rejoice in the Lord, O ye just:
praise becometh the upright.
Give praise to the Lord on the harp;
sing to him with the psaltery,
the instrument of ten strings.
Sing to him a new canticle,
sing well unto him with a loud noise.
For the word of the Lord is right,
and all his works are done with faithfulness.
He loveth mercy and judgment;
the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.
By the word of the Lord the heavens were established;
and all the power of them by the spirit of his mouth:
Gathering together the waters of the sea, as in a vessel;
laying up the depths in storehouses.

Let all the earth fear the Lord,
and let all the inhabitants of the world be in awe of him.
For he spoke and they were made:
he commanded and they were created.
The Lord bringeth to naught the counsels of nations;
and he rejecteth the devices of people,
and casteth away the counsels of princes.
But the counsel of the Lord standeth for ever:
the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord:
the people whom he hath chosen for his inheritance.
The Lord hath looked from heaven:
he hath beheld all the sons of men.
From his habitation which he hath prepared,
he hath looked upon all that dwell on the earth.
He who hath made the hearts of every one of them:
who understandeth all their works.

The king is not saved by a great army:
nor shall the giant be saved by his own great strength.
Vain is the horse for safety:
neither shall he be saved by the abundance of his strength.
Behold the eyes of the Lord are on them that fear him:
and on them that hope in his mercy.
To deliver their souls from death;
and feed them in famine.

Our soul waiteth for the Lord:
for he is our helper and protector.
For in him our heart shall rejoice:
and in his holy name we have trusted.
Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us,
as we have hoped in thee.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Short reading

Romans 13:11 - 13

And that knowing the season; that it is now the hour for us to rise from sleep. For now our salvation is nearer than when we believed. The night is passed, and the day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy.

Canticle

Benedictus

The Messiah and his forerunner

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words "Blessed be the Lord…"

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people: And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant: As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, who are from the beginning: Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us: To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy testament, The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us, That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear, In holiness and justice before him, all our days.

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways: To give knowledge of salvation to his people, unto the remission of their sins: Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us: To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Prayers and Intercessions

We are called to heaven, beloved brethren, so let us bless Jesus, high priest of our faith, and call on him:
    - Lord, you are our God and our saviour.
Almighty King, through our baptism you have made us a royal priesthood:
may we offer you a constant sacrifice of praise.
Help us to keep your commandments
so that through the Holy Spirit we may dwell in you, and you in us.
Give us your eternal wisdom
so that it may be with us today and work with us.
Grant that today we may bring sadness to no-one
but on the contrary, give happiness to all we meet.

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

Lord, look with favour on our morning prayers.
Brighten the inmost places of our hearts with your love so that no dark desires can hide there:
heal us with the light of your heavenly grace.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 God for ever and ever.
Amen.

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words "May the Lord bless us"

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.

Re: Morning and Night Prayers for Tuesday, August 28

Compline (Night Prayer)

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words “O God…”.

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience.

Penitential Rite

I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

Amen.

Psalm 142 (143)

A prayer in time of trouble

Lord, I trust you: do not hide your face from me.

Hear, O Lord, my prayer:
give ear to my supplication in thy truth:
hear me in thy justice.
And enter not into judgment with thy servant:
for in thy sight no man living shall be justified.

For the enemy hath persecuted my soul:
he hath brought down my life to the earth.
He hath made me to dwell in darkness
as those that have been dead of old:
And my spirit is in anguish within me:
my heart within me is troubled.
I remembered the days of old,
I meditated on all thy works:
I meditated upon the works of thy hands.
I stretched forth my hands to thee:
my soul is as earth without water unto thee.

Hear me speedily, O Lord:
my spirit hath fainted away.
Turn not away thy face from me,
lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.
Cause me to hear thy mercy in the morning;
for in thee have I hoped.
Make the way known to me, wherein I should walk:
for I have lifted up my soul to thee.
Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord,
to thee have I fled:
Teach me to do thy will,
for thou art my God.

Thy good spirit shall lead me into the right land:
For thy name's sake, O Lord,
thou wilt quicken me in thy justice.
Thou wilt bring my soul out of trouble:
And in thy mercy thou wilt destroy my enemies.
And thou wilt cut off all them that afflict my soul:
for I am thy servant.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Lord, I trust you: do not hide your face from me.

Reading

1 Peter 5:8-9

Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour. Whom resist ye, strong in faith: knowing that the same affliction befalls your brethren who are in the world.

Short Responsory

Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Canticle

Nunc Dimittis

Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words “Now thou dost…”.

Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord,
according to thy word in peace;
Because my eyes have seen thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples:
A light to the revelation of the Gentiles,
and the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Prayer

Let us pray.

Of your kindness, Lord, dispel the darkness of this night, so that we your servants may go to sleep in peace and wake to the light of the new day, rejoicing in your name.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.

Final Antiphon

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our Life, our Sweetness, and our Hope.
To Thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To Thee do we send up our sighs
mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate,
Thine Eyes of Mercy toward us,
and after this, our exile,
show unto us the Blessed Fruit of thy Womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary;
Pray for us O Holy Mother of God
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Amen.

End with the Triple Prayer: Our Father, Hail Mary, and Apostles Creed.
