"‘Tonight, in the city of David, a Savior is born, 'tis Christ the Lord.'"

"There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church, which is, of course, quite a different thing."
-Bishop Fulton J. Sheen
Placating terrorists, meeting with dictators, compassion for murderers... but no humanity for the unborn... incredible.

Morning and Night Prayers for Saturday, September 1

Morning Prayer (Lauds)

Begin with the Dual Prayer (Our Father and Hail Mary).

Then, the Invitatory Psalm:

Make the Sign of the Cross on the lips at the words "O Lord, open my lips."

O Lord, open my lips.

And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

The Lord’s is the earth and its fulness: come, let us worship.

Come let us praise the Lord with joy:
let us joyfully sing to God our saviour.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving;
and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.

The Lord’s is the earth and its fulness: come, let us worship.

For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
For in his hand are all the ends of the earth:
and the heights of the mountains are his.
For the sea is his, and he made it:
and his hands formed the dry land.

The Lord’s is the earth and its fulness: come, let us worship.

Come let us adore and fall down:
and weep before the Lord that made us.
For he is the Lord our God:
and we are the people of his pasture
and the sheep of his hand.

The Lord’s is the earth and its fulness: come, let us worship.

Today if you shall hear his voice,
harden not your hearts:
As in the provocation,
according to the day of temptation in the wilderness:
where your fathers tempted me, they proved me,
and saw my works.

The Lord’s is the earth and its fulness: come, let us worship.

Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said:
These always err in heart.
And these men have not known my ways:
so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.

The Lord’s is the earth and its fulness: come, let us worship.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 118 (119): 145-152

I cried with my whole heart,
hear me, O Lord:
I will seek thy justifications.
I cried unto thee, save me:
that I may keep thy commandments.

I prevented the dawning of the day, and cried:
because in thy words I very much hoped.
My eyes to thee have prevented the morning:
that I might meditate on thy words.

Hear thou my voice, O Lord, according to thy mercy:
and quicken me according to thy mercy.
They that persecute me have drawn nigh to iniquity;
but they are gone far off from the law.

Thou art near, O Lord:
and all thy ways are truth.
I have known from the beginning concerning thy testimonies:
that thou hast founded them for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle

Exodus 15

Hymn of victory after crossing the Red Sea

Let us sing to the Lord:
for he is gloriously magnified,
the horse and the rider
he hath thrown into the sea.

The Lord is my strength and my praise,
and he is become salvation to me:
he is my God and I will glorify him:
the God of my father, and I will exalt him.

The Lord is as a man of war,
Almighty is his name.
Pharao's chariots and his army
he hath cast into the sea:
His chosen captains are drowned in the Red Sea.

The depths have covered them,
they are sunk to the bottom like a stone.
Thy right hand, O Lord,
is magnified in strength:
thy right hand, O Lord,
hath slain the enemy.
And in the multitude of thy glory
thou hast put down thy adversaries:
thou hast sent thy wrath,
which hath devoured them like stubble.

And with the blast of thy anger
the waters were gathered together:
the flowing water stood,
the depth were gathered together in the midst of the sea.

The enemy said:
I will pursue and overtake,
I will divide the spoils,
my soul shall have its fill:
I will draw my sword,
my hand shall slay them.

Thy wind blew and the sea covered them:
they sunk as lead in the mighty waters.
Who is like to thee, among the strong, O Lord?
who is like to thee, glorious in holiness,
terrible and praiseworthy,
doing wonders?

Thou stretchedst forth thy hand,
and the earth swallowed them.
In thy mercy thou hast been a leader
to the people which thou hast redeemed:
and in thy strength
thou hast carried them to thy holy habitation.

Nations rose up, and were angry:
sorrows took hold on the inhabitants of Philisthiim.
Then were the princes of Edom troubled,
trembling seized on the stout men of Moab:
all the inhabitants of Chanaan became stiff.
Let fear and dread fall upon them, in the greatness of thy arm:
let them become unmoveable as a stone,
until thy people, O Lord, pass by:
until this thy people pass by,
which thou hast possessed.

Thou shalt bring them in,
and plant them in the mountain of thy inheritance,
in thy most firm habitation which thou hast made, O Lord;
thy sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established.
The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 116 (117

Praise of the merciful Lord

O praise the Lord, all ye nations:
praise him, all ye people.
For his mercy is confirmed upon us:
and the truth of the Lord remaineth for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Short Reading

2 Peter 1:10 - 11

Wherefore, brethren, labour the more, that by good works you may make sure your calling and election. For doing these things, you shall not sin at any time. For so an entrance shall be ministered to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Canticle

Benedictus

The Messiah and his forerunner

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words "Blessed be the Lord…"

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people: And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant: As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, who are from the beginning: Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us: To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy testament, The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us, That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear, In holiness and justice before him, all our days.

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways: To give knowledge of salvation to his people, unto the remission of their sins: Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us: To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Prayers and Intercessions

By becoming man Christ became our brother and a compassionate High Priest before God. Let us bless him as we beg for his help:
    - Lord, pour out on us the treasures of your love.
We consecrate our day to you, the shining Sun of justice,
who shone on us when we were baptized.
We will bless you every moment of this day,
and praise your name in everything we do.
Mary, your mother, was obedient to your word:
lead our steps today in the path of your teaching.
As we journey through this perishable world,
may we look forward to your imperishable heaven.
In faith, hope, and love,
may we have a foretaste of the joy that is to come.

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

Lord, may the splendour of the Resurrection shine in our hearts.
Make us worthy to escape the shadows of death
and arrive in the brightness of eternity.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 God for ever and ever.
Amen.

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words "May the Lord bless us…"

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.

Re: Morning and Night Prayers for Saturday, September 1

Compline (Night Prayer)

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words “O God…”.

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience.

Penitential Rite

I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

Amen.

Psalm 4

Thanksgiving

Take pity on me, Lord, and listen to my prayer.

When I called upon him,
the God of my justice heard me:
when I was in distress,
thou hast enlarged me.
Have mercy on me:
and hear my prayer.

O ye sons of men,
how long will you be dull of heart?
why do you love vanity,
and seek after lying?
Know ye also
that the Lord hath made his holy one wonderful:
the Lord will hear me when I shall cry unto him.

Be angry, and sin not:
the things you say in your hearts,
be sorry for them upon your beds.
Offer up the sacrifice of justice,
and trust in the Lord:

Many say,
Who sheweth us good things?
The light of thy countenance O Lord, is signed upon us:
thou hast given gladness in my heart.
By the fruit of their corn, their wine and oil,
they are multiplied.
In peace in the selfsame I will sleep, and I will rest:
For thou, O Lord, singularly hast settled me in hope.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Take pity on me, Lord, and listen to my prayer.

Psalm 133 (134)

Evening prayer in the Temple

Bless the Lord through the night.

Behold now bless ye the Lord,
all ye servants of the Lord:
Who stand in the house of the Lord,
in the courts of the house of our God.
In the nights lift up your hands to the holy places,
and bless ye the Lord.

May the Lord out of Sion bless thee,
he that made heaven and earth.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Bless the Lord through the night.

Reading

Deuteronomy 6:4-7

Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole strength. And these words which I command thee this day, shall be in thy heart: And thou shalt tell them to thy children, and thou shalt meditate upon them sitting in thy house, and walking on thy journey, sleeping and rising.

Short Responsory

Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
    - Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness.
    - Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
    - Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Canticle

Nunc Dimittis

Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Make the Sign of the Cross at the words “now thou dost…”.

Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace; Because my eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples: A light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Prayer

Let us pray.

Come to us, Lord, this night, and give us the strength to rise at dawn rejoicing in the resurrection of your Anointed, who lives and reigns for ever and ever, Amen.

May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.

Final Antiphon

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy,
Our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve,
To thee do we send up our sighs,
Mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us,
And after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

End with the Triple Prayer: Our Father, Hail Mary, and Apostles Creed.
