Iraqi bishop kidnapped
quote: Mosul, Feb. 29, 2008 (CWNews.com) - The Chaldean Catholic Bishop of Mosul, Iraq, has been abducted, the AsiaNews service reports.
Bishop Paulos Faraj Raho was seized by terrorists who attacked his car as he left the Holy Spirit cathedral in Mosul after leading the Stations of the Cross on Friday, February 29. Three companions who had been in the car with him were killed.
A Church spokesman in Iraq confirmed that the bishop was in the custody of his kidnappers, who had contacted the Chaldean Church to make a ransom demand. Iraqi Catholics did not know whether or not the bishop had been wounded in the attack.
Prayers are needed.

Re: Iraqi bishop kidnapped
This is just terrible.
May God grant him the strength to endure.
The Bishop is certainly in my prayers.

Re: Iraqi bishop kidnapped
Apparently the US "christian" government is busy destroying ancient christian communities by supporting "moderate" muslims - Kosovo , Turkyey and of couse the Shiite government/Sunni militas of Irak.

Re: Iraqi bishop kidnapped
The U.S. has a secular government. It always has. The U.S. used to be a Christian nation, albeit an heretical and anti-Catholic one.
This experience of the Bishop's is not unique for Christians in Babylon. Kidnapping for ransom is common and is one of the reason over half the Christian population has left during the last few years of occupation.

"The U.S. used to be a Christian nation"
The future is much more interesting to me in this case.

Re: Iraqi bishop kidnapped
Maybe interesting in a bad way for us. George Bush has managed to give Christianity a very bad name now. There are many younger and more impressionable people who are rejecting Christianity because they associate it with aggressive militarism. The backlash will go on for years.

That's because no one has figured out yet that you just can not turn your faith off based on which office you hold. And this is where separation of Church and State get all mixed up.

Re: Iraqi bishop kidnapped
I am not sure that separation of Church and State is really possible. One thing for sure is that no individual can or should leave his morality at the door if he becomes a public official. The temptations to compromise your convictions when power can be won or lost has to be incredibly powerful. Some sell out for the price of a potter's field.

Re: Iraqi bishop murdered
This is horrible.
quote: The body of Iraq's kidnapped Chaldean Catholic Archbishop has been found near the northern city of Mosul, prompting warnings of a mass exodus of Christians from Iraq.
Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho was abducted on February 29 shortly after leaving Mass in Mosul, in what the Pope described as an "abominable" act. The three people who were with him were killed by the kidnappers.
"Monsignor Rahho is dead. We have found him lifeless near Mosul," the auxiliary bishop of Iraq, Monsignor Shlemon Warduni, told the Italian SIR news agency today.
A host of leading charities and Christians in Iraq warned that the community now faced a mass exodus amid rising threats, discrimination and violence.
Reacting to the killing, Pope Benedict XVI said it caused him "deep sadness". He added: "The most absurd and unjustified violence continues to afflict the Iraqi people and in particular the small Christian community."
Canon Andrew White, the only Anglican vicar working in Baghdad warned of the "very real danger faced by Christians in Iraq", adding: "This awful event happened in the very heartland of Iraqi Christianity in Nineveh. We are in tears - we are devasted. We are not giving up our faith in Jesus and I am not leaving this beloved land of Iraq."
Daniel Hoffman, director of Middle East Concern, a charity campaigning for the rights of Christians in Iraq, today said that - fearing for their safety - the killing could lead to Christians leaving Iraq in even greater numbers.
"This will lead to an exodus of the Christian community in Iraq," he said. "This is going to be a very heavy blow for the Church. The community is devastated."
His concerns were echoed by John Pontifex, a spokesman for Aid to the Church in Need, which campaigned for the archbishop's release. He said the death of the archbishop would send a clear signal "that no one among the Christian community is safe".
He added: "Among the parishioners, fears about safety have escalated to such a degree that this piece of news is like the last straw and will only serve to increase the exodus of Christians which may well result in the extinction of Christianity in Iraq.
