Re: So sad
Michael - I trust only Jesus , not a bunch of men desiring power above all else . That being said , the people cannot be definition be free in any state - the overlords can be more visible ( see Stalin ) or more subtle ( see the World Bank/IMF ) .
What I worry is the change in the status quo - even under Stalin the orthodox church was allowed to function . Look at Turkey now - and all that dreams of the future caliphate - and tell me how the christians are doing there .
To Tony - I doubt an evacuation of the Vatican is the end of the world - we had such problems in the past and we're still here . The point is that you will be forced to live like the Chinese Catholics for example if the current trends continue . And no , I am not afraid , but we are told to be wise and Paul is a brilliant example in dealing with the secular state . Regarding the RCC seen as weak , you should only look at the urgent need for excommunicating the "catholic" politicians who are ignoring the faith .

quote: - I doubt an evacuation of the Vatican is the end of the world
According to many prophecies, when the Bishop of Rome flees the Vatican, the end is quite near.
quote: but we are told to be wise and Paul is a brilliant example in dealing with the secular state .
But where did Paul insist that he needed help from the state to preach salvation? Or worse yet, force salvation?
quote: Regarding the RCC seen as weak , you should only look at the urgent need for excommunicating the "catholic" politicians who are ignoring the faith .
It's never as easy as simply excommunicating AD. Never.

Re: So sad
"when the Bishop of Rome flees the Vatican"
and goes to Avignon - we've already had that . I think the church will be an underground organisation when the end comes .
"force salvation"
I never said that - forced faith is worthless . We must however use the secular factions who are not opposed to our existence .
"It's never as easy as simply excommunicating AD"
Well , that works in the east . A simple look at the jesuits , on the other hand , can make me sick .

Re: So sad
Come on Michael , Paul or John were not afraid of excommunicating false prophets well before their natural end . And still Law is promoted , why ?

Re: So sad
Law was retired, not promoted. As for the rest, I am not going to get into the game of second guessing the Pope in all his decisions. That is not something that people not selected by the Holy Spirit to take the role of Peter should do. That is what schismatics do. They believe their natural wisdom is superior to God's.
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle;
be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray:
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God,
cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
--- Nothing by force, but everything by charity.
Ss. Thomas Aquinas and Augustine, pray for us.

Re: So sad
Ah, Michael, my friend.... I used the prayer to St. Michael at the bottom of my posts, the first few times I posted on the imdb Religion and Philosophy board.

Re: So sad
AD - You should be a happy camper. Do you recall Leon Kennedy from the POTC board and now on the Religion and Philosophy board? He just converted from Protestantism to Orthodoxy. He was raised a Lutheran. I do not know what he has been recently, but he has been searching for a long time. Why he settled on Orthodoxy I do not know.

Re: So sad
Actually Jordan - LSK - is fighting the current orthodox doctrine that bans non-celibate gays - in his own words , he is like the catholics who support abortion . I sent him a PM , and he answered that he likes me as a person , no matter his current doctrine . Orthodoxy is exotic in the USA , that's all .

Re: So sad
Yes, I know that Leon is gay and so I was a little surprised when he found favor with Orthodoxy.
